Children Fashion Photographer
I am very lucky in my career to have many unique and interesting photography experiences, this experience was no exception.
Persnickety Clothing company is very passionate about helping others and “giving back”. Over a year ago I had the special opportunity to meet Millie, a beautiful, sweet, energetic little girl that lit up any room she walked into. Millie’s dream was to become a fashion designer and Persnickety gave her that opportunity when they let her design some clothes that were sold to raise money for her and other families battling cancer. Millie passed away right after she saw her dream of being a designer come to life… I will always be impacted by the way she made me feel as I documented her designing with Persnickety. Her smile, her laughter, her spunky personality – I will never forget her and the sweet spirit she had. She has a little brother that completely idolized her and my heart aches to think about what that family is going through with the loss of their little princess.
As a photographer, documenting those types of experiences are extremely difficult, I have to keep my emotions together, it is especially hard for me because “cancer” has hit my family closely as my 24 year old brother passed away from it about 6 years ago. Although it is difficult, I love that I have a talent that can capture moments and memories that families will cherish and have forever.
The photos below are actually not Millie, they are about her beautiful best friend Cami and another adorable little girl, Phoebe. Cami was the next little girl that Persnickety chose to be a “fashion designer” (they plan to do it every year). So a couple of months before these photos, I documented Cami (currently in remission) designing some beautiful dresses with the owner of Persnickety Clothing (will post those at some point).
Persnickety found out that one of their close friends and retailers had a daughter, Phoebe having a tough go with cancer. They decided to fly her out from Texas to meet them, meet Cami and take part in the fun of being a fashion designer for a day. Phoebe and Cami met each other, designed together, got to see “behind the scenes” at Persnickety and have an amazing, memorable day. I was the lucky one that got to silently observe all of the love and happiness while snapping my camera.
Because of Phoebe’s chemo treatments it has caused one of her eyes to go crossed eyed most of the time, after I took the photos I was able to grab her eye from one side, then flip it and place it over the one that is not working properly right now in Photoshop of course. The owner of Persnickety told me that Phoebe’s mom was in tears after she saw the photos saying that she hadn’t seen her daughter look at her straight in the eyes for over a year. That was one of the single most fulfilling moments for me as a photographer, I still get emotional thinking about it.
The dresses at the end of the photos that Cami and Phoebe are wearing are the dresses that Cami designed with the owner of Persnickety a couple of months prior.
Persnickety is currently trying to raise money for Phoebe as she needs funds to continue certain treatments, please if you have anything you can give, go to www.persnicketyclothing.com or their Facebook page for details.
