unique children fashion photography | sneak peek of editorial for Child Model Magazine’s Holdiay Issue

I went to Myrtle Beach a couple of weeks ago to shoot a couple of editorial’s for Child Model Magazine.  They were amazing to work with, the models were incredible… getting the vintage piano out on the beach was well let’s say an experience, but turned out great in the end.  Stay tuned for many more from this shoot…

Children Fashion Photography for Fashion Magazine, Babiekins.

Children Fashion Photographer

world wide children fashion photographer

published editorial for babiekins children fashion magazine

abstract children fashion photography

I am so excited to post these photos, I have been meaning to for months, I couldn’t publish them until they were published in the magazine, they were for their June/ Summer 2012 issue, and I was so busy when they got published I have been trying to find the time to post them!  There are TONS… after you have a team work so hard on hair, makeup, fashion, etc. I want to make sure as a photographer that I get every possible great shot that I can.

When I was trying to come up with the concept for this shoot, I spent days just thinking about it, I had tons of ideas, but nothing really seemed to stick.  I wanted to do something kind of abstract and eye catching.  Whether the reader liked the photos or not, the goal was to make them stop and stare.  I knew for sure I wanted to use my reflection pool, as I had just used it to shoot the Mia Belle Baby fashion line a month earlier, and thought it would be unique for the magazine.

During this time I was trying to come up with the concept, the Dr. Suess Movie, The Lorax was starting to advertise on TV and there was something about the fluffy, colorful trees that I really liked.  So that’s how the concept began, I came up with it one day and I knew that was it.  I will spend a lot of time, hours and hours coming up with concepts, but when I figure it out, that’s it, I don’t change it, I will do anything at that point to make it happen.

I had an amazing team around me, from the amazing h/m artists, Jamie Howard and Charisse Miller, Fashion stylist, Lindsey Shores, artist Tanner Williams and more.  We had tons of interns, and the models were all so amazing to work with.

I really fought everybody around me on this concept, most people didn’t think I could pull it off as it was on the line of cheesy, or just not working.  It turned out exactly how I wanted it, I created my magical, whimsical, Dr. Suess, abstract children’s forest.  We had designers and children fashion salons send fashion from all over Europe from Children Salon, Young Versace, Bang Bang, Chloe, No Sugar Added and more.

We used live butterflies (first time I used them) – and that was just an added bonus to the shoot.  The models were a little nervous around them at first but then warmed up to them.  You have about 5 minutes when you release the butterflies to get good shots, so it is a little stressful.

A special thanks to my amazing husband who makes my sets come to life.  From the water to how the trees will stand up or hang, to creating the structure under the balls (trees) – I would never in a million years be able to do the type of photography that I do with the sets, etc. if it weren’t for him.  He didn’t sleep the week before this shoot, I am so lucky to have him support me with my weird photography concepts. ;)  I will be shooting in Myrtle Beach in a couple of weeks, and I’m trying to coordinate something pretty unique, he is not too happy about what I am trying to do at the beach…. hehe   Stay tuned so you can see what magic I am trying to create there for Child Model Magazine and the amazing models that were cast for this upcoming shoot.

I have split up the photos into a couple of different pages, so when you get to the bottom of a batch you can click below those to see more photos from the shoot, there are so many, I needed to separate them so you can load the web pages. :)  And sorry if there are typos in my blog posts, I am too lazy to re-read them before I post them.

So excited to be shooting for CMM (Child Model Magazine)!  Here is their official announcement about working with them: CMM Announcement.  They are a children fashion magazine and I was so excited when they contacted me!  I will be in Myrtle Beach the first week of October shooting a couple of editorials on the beach for them, I will also be in Atlanta for their Top Model search.  And then three lucky models will be flown out to Utah for a shoot I am doing in March for their Cover!

They also just launched a Teen Model Magazine, and I am looking forward to being apart  of that as well!  Starting with their December issue, my photos will be featured in every single issue, ongoing.  I have 4-5 editorials coming up in the next few weeks – one is for Babiekins Fashion Magazine as well, who I also love to work with.  I am working with many amazing designers in Europe that are sending me tons of beautiful fashion to use on my shoots.  Stay tuned to see some fun photos!

Update from Amber’s assistant on what has been going on around here!

Hi!  This is Kalen, Amber’s assistant, I will jump on here from time to time to give updates, so thought I would say a quick “hello” and let you know what has been going on around here!

Fall Family Appointments

If you are looking to do a fall family appointment, we only have a certain amount available and are already booking them all up!  Please call us today at 801.427.7490 to talk to me if you would like amazing, candid, beautiful fall photos for your Christmas cards this year….  Although Amber has so many new family pics she needs to post, here is a link to our Family Photography on our website.  And remember all of our “photography sessions” come with ALL of the digital photos, with tons artistically edited!  A typical family session depending on the location, family size, etc. (indoor/outdoor), usually you end up with 500-1000 digital photos.

We keep certain amount of “family, newborn, children, commercial” appointments available as it is so easy for Amber to become just a “family photographer” or just a “wedding photographer”… and she loves all of the different types of photography so much this is the best way for us to manage that she keeps variety.  She has been moving more and more into a higher percentage of her work being commercial shooting, for companies, clothing lines, etc. which she LOVES.  So, we could have a Newborn Appointment available in a 4 weeks but a family appointment available in 8 weeks if that makes sense.  WHATEVER it is you are looking for from teams to weddings, we will have 2012 completely booked solid very soon, so don’t wait – give us a call!  And if you are one of those that just had a baby and didn’t make an appointment prior, once in a while Amber will open up a spot on our weekly calendar to accommodate depending on her workload, so always give us a call to check, I would love to talk to you!

Blog Update

If you do follow our blog, we realize there hasn’t been much to follow lately – Amber is scrambling to get caught up with things and working into extremely “late/early” hours into the night. ;)  It is a priority to her though and so her old blog WILL start to migrate over, plus she will start posting her new content better… in the mean time, she will post pics once and a while on our Facebook page: Frosted Productions on Facebook, make sure to become a fan there if you haven’t!

Needing Little Girls All Ages for Upcoming Photoshoots

She has about a million photo-shoots coming up where she is need in little girls for clothing lines, hair accessories, shoots for companies websites, etc.  She always gives first opportunity to her fans and their children first before using a modeling agency as for “kid shoots” she believes the natural “child candid look” is so beautiful she generally doesn’t need models.  SO the benefit for our fans kids, is that you get to be apart of these amazing photoshoots and get all of the edited photos that your child is in for freeeeeeeee!!!!

Published in Children’s Fashion Magazine Summer 2012 Issue

One more thing to keep your eyes open for is the new Issue of Babiekins Magazine is set to be released any day – and yes, Amber’s work will be featured!  Wait until you see these pics….  you will be amazed from the set that was created to the extravagant hair, makeup, etc.  We have not been allowed to post any pics from the shoot yet because the magazine doesn’t let us until it’s been published.  IF you are not familiar with Babiekins Magazine , they are a children’s fashion magazine that was recently just featured in Brasil Vogue, so to have our work in it is pretty amazing.  We had clothing shipped from top brands and designers from all over Europe, including Young Versace.  Oh and did I mention that Amber had live butterflies shipped in for this?  Yes, they came on dry ice and we got to see them come to life as they landed on the little girls arms, heads, etc.  It was pretty amazing to be apart of.  The team that Amber had for this from fashion stylist to 4 hair and makeup artists, all the models, interns, assistants…. it was an insane production!  Amber, used “Productions” in our company name when she originally named it because she can do a “production”, you will know what I mean when you see the pics that are coming any day now!

Find out some of the editing that goes into final photos! Beware I do talk about runny noses in this post.

My kids noses are not the only ones I wipe…

I thought I would start writing a little bit more about my editing process to educated customers on what goes into my editing and then I may also start posting some videos and tips for any photographers out there as well that would like to see how I do things on my photos.

I will continue to write posts about this, but let’s talk about nosey’s and toesy’s. ;) Some photographer’s “retouch” by adding a contrast boost to the photo, this is very different than the type of editing I do.  Every photographer has their own style, one is not better than the other, just preference.  My “style” has become very editorial, what I mean by that is many photos have a “commercial or catalog” feel to them.  It is very important to me though that the person in the photo still looks like themselves – it’s not like I’m taking freckles off of faces, that would be a “manipulation”… but okay, many people don’t realize I have lowered their shoulder, taken a little out under the chin or maybe taken in their leg, butt (should I call it “bum”, I never know) or something in a bit… the goal is that even my client, the person in the photo would never know, that it still is “them” but I’m bringing out the best in them.  Of course many of those things I just mentioned would NEVER need to be done on a child. ;)

Since I do so much child photography, I am not only taking out runny noses, but yes, I will even pick a boogers – does that make you sick?  I’m the one staring at it 10 times the size that it normally would be. ;)  It’s not like you would ever think, “I don’t want my kid edited” – they are not in that way, it is their natural beauty, their natural eye color (I never change the actual color of the eyes, just brighten them or put more light in them which changes them just like it would if you were in the sun). The reason you get photos is to capture a moment, in a children shoot I take 600-1000 photos, this is necessary to get CANDID shots, and if you are worrying about wiping their nose every second, the candid shot doesn’t happen.  I have even taken out pee from a little girl peeing her pants all down her legs for every edited photo (took hours) as we were in the mountains and there was no change of clothes.  For things like that you don’t want to simply “color or paint” in Photoshop over her jeans, then it wouldn’t look realistic, so I got many legs from shots before she peed (is peed a word?) and then used them for the edited shots.

So this post might be incredibly boring to most people reading if you have gotten this far, I just felt it may be interesting for people to realize I’m taking the red veins out of their eyes or lightening them.  As far as “toes” goes because this post is called “wiping noses and toeses” (I had to use “toes” because it rhymed with nose, not that the editing on them is anything related).  So many little kids especially newborns have bad circulation in their feet and in photos their feet get deep red or purple, in many photos I am matching them to their leg color.

All of the stuff takes tons of time, and when you get a photo from me, you are not going to notice that their feet color is fixed because it just looks natural.  You wouldn’t know there was one of one of those cute, crusty little boogies (sorry) up their nose that would have been in the photo because I was laying on the ground or that there was redness in the whites of the eyes because you or a child was tired.  And yes I do much more from skin smoothing, bags under the eyes, head swapping, finger nail polish removing, etc.  I have taken 50 pounds off of people before but that is another post…

- I have too much editing to do, so don’t have time to proof read this – sorry if there is typos.  Oh, and if you are wondering if I will ever post photos again to this blog, yes that is my goal… :)
